Visitation: 9:30am to 10:30am Funeral: 10:30am
Joseph James Cole was born on January 31, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, to Joseph Houston Cole and Louise Hall Cole. From the very beginning, Joseph carried a spirit of strength and compassion that touched the lives of so many.
Joseph was raised in Cabrini Green and remained connected to both the Cabrini Green and Winthrop communities throughout his life. At a young age, Joe gave his life to Christ and became a faithful member of Wayman AME Church. His faith remained an important part of his life and was reflected in the care and generosity he showed to others. He attended Jenner Elementary School and graduated from Robert A. Waller High School in Lincoln Park. Joseph proudly served in the United States Navy and later retired as a counselor with Job Corps, where he dedicated himself to supporting and encouraging young people.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Aaron; four children: Joseph, Kimberley, James, and Cassandra; six grandchildren: Freddy, Candace, Jordyn, James, Jason, and Jolene; four great-grandchildren: Kyrie, Levi, Paisley, and Everett; one nephew, Derrick; one great-nephew, Pierre; and one great-niece, Amari. He also leaves three stepdaughters: Cantrell, Lakeesha, and Shameka, along with many cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Louise, and stepsons Kenyatta and Robert.
Jody, as he was affectionately called by family and close friends, was known for his gift of conversation and his willingness to help others. He took pride in mentoring neighborhood children and positively impacted many lives through his guidance and support. His legacy of faith, service, and love for his community will continue to be remembered by all who knew him.
Until his illness, he was an active member of Fort Erie Elks Lodge #167 of Joliet, St, Joel Lodge #34 of MW United Lodge A.F. & A.M., Chicago and an active member of St. James COGIC, Joliet.
